Are you saying that paddling above Thompson Ford is not recommended?

The above access information is correct. However, the river channel has moved further west and the access leads to the normally dry channel, so you must carry your equipment for some distance to enter the water. I had to use flagging tape to identify the dry channel when using it as a takeout after putting in on the Middle Fork just outside of Lesterville.

I thought McHenry, Tansil and the others know of some other way in there besides hiking from downstream. My hat is off to you for making the trek and thank you for the information you have provided.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Yes, where exactly is the put-in trail off of D? And is this aka Cathedral Canyon?

No need to reply. I have now been there and even though it was a stream in the middle of a National Forest, the water quality was not very good.

Thank you all for the info. I just wanted a short run while my wife was looking for small granite boulders with crystals and mica in the area. Any suggestions where to find those? Material supply companies here in the STL area have stuff labeled as Royal Gorge. I know that location but never looked for the granite mix there.

So the small parking area/overlook is gone?

There is great place to camp on the Oconto river called Bagley Rapids campground. For a small fee you can camp and play the rapids & ledges in a beautiful pine forest. The stretch is 3/4 miles long (II-III) and you will be located between the Wolf and Peshtigo. It is a good chaser after spending the day on one of the other premier runs and there is still some daylight left.

As mentioned before, the Menominee (big water III+) is northeast of the Peshtigo and the Red river just south of the reservation has dam releases from Lower Red Lake on a short I-III section that we used to hit on our way home.

Thank you Chuck. You have always come through whenever I have inquired about any oddities such as Greer Spring branch, Shannon County shut-ins and so on. You truly are a River Zen Master.
And thanks to you George for the recent stream/land owner info. SYOTR

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Be advised that there have been several drownings at Rockford Beach on the Big. Cedar Hill and Morse Mill are excellent options when water levels are not too high.

What a lucky stretch of river. It seems to be the only section that gets attention every year when there are many more miles that need to be addressed.
