mac started the topic Buffalo vs Kings in the forum General Discussion 2 months, 1 week ago

Planning a trip to Arkansas this spring and would like opinions on whether to paddle the Buffalo from Kyle’s to Pruitt or run the King from Marble to Marshall Ford. I have paddled from Ponca to Kyle’s so I kind of know what to expect. However, I know nothing about the King and would appreciate any information and comparisons.

No need to reply. I have now been there and even though it was a stream in the middle of a National Forest, the water quality was not very good.

Thank you all for the info. I just wanted a short run while my wife was looking for small granite boulders with crystals and mica in the area. Any suggestions where to find those? Material supply companies here in the STL area have stuff labeled as Royal Gorge. I know that location but never looked for the granite mix there.

Can anyone provide any information about access at the new bridge location over middle Stouts? Is there a better opportunity to access the stream from hwy 72?

There is great place to camp on the Oconto river called Bagley Rapids campground. For a small fee you can camp and play the rapids & ledges in a beautiful pine forest. The stretch is 3/4 miles long (II-III) and you will be located between the Wolf and Peshtigo. It is a good chaser after spending the day on one of the other premier runs and there…[Read more]

Thank you Chuck. You have always come through whenever I have inquired about any oddities such as Greer Spring branch, Shannon County shut-ins and so on. You truly are a River Zen Master.
And thanks to you George for the recent stream/land owner info. SYOTR

I am interested in checking out Wachita Creek after reading about a trip that was posted by George. It appears to be a short run, but I am more interested in the geology of the shut in. Is there a correlation with the St. Francis gauge that anyone can provide? Thanks.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Be advised that there have been several drownings at Rockford Beach on the Big. Cedar Hill and Morse Mill are excellent options when water levels are not too high.</p>

Can someone explain why there are state park signs above the hwy 72 bridge on Stouts Creek? What state park?
I wanted some pnp action a few weeks ago and decided to run the middle section of Stouts, but found no trespassing signs below the bridge and would like to know where the best/correct access points are. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

What a lucky stretch of river. It seems to be the only section that gets attention every year when there are many more miles that need to be addressed.

You should do the PnP at Bagley campground on the Oconto while you are in the area. It is worth it since the levels are really decent right now.

mac replied to the topic Vermillion River in the forum General Discussion 4 years ago

The Vermilion river is worthy of a road trip if you are camping in the area and hike the canyons of Starved Rock State Park in the same weekend. The river alone does not compare to the St Francis in terms of gradient and the number of rapids. However, it does have one rapid (Wildcat) that resembles something from the Big South Fork gorge in TN. It…[Read more]

If you want scenic class III-IV, the Green River Gorge was my favorite place to go when I was at Ft Lewis, WA back in the day.
