Could there be a lifetime membership option like American Whitewater has?
I was happy to give them $500 and never think about it again.

Really?! Did you leave as string of broken hearts across west Tennessee as a young man like you are leaving a string of used boats across Missouri?!
Show some commitment! 🙂
BTW, made some friends in North Bend yesterday, paddled the South Fork of the Snoqualimie as a nice “everything else is blown out” run. Going to the Middle Middle one day this week after work.
I DIDN’T GET NEAR ERNIE’S CANYON! lol

KEEP THE START ABOVE THE POOL!!!
Pain is a beautiful thing, it shows you you’re alive and shows you your limitations.
When you find the courage to fight on, despite the struggle, you gain character. Something lacking these days in our society.
BTW, I just got done doing 203 miles of flatwater in a 120 pound boat in under 8 days (Grand Canyon)…
In other words, bring it, I’ll be your huckleberry!

During college years, a friend of mine and myself would watch the Die Hard series in marathon form while enjoying Tennessee firewater. One of my favorite Christmas traditions.
We never got through number 2 before the magic elixir took its toll. Best Christmas movie ever made!

Here is a link to a photo album on my FB that has some stills of a flat water stern squirt sequence. This is how I initiate a stern squirt/stall.
I think most folks use the double pump method, that works too, I just prefer the way I do it because you can get the pirouette spin as well 🙂
1.Paddle in a straight line at speed
2. Take one big forward sweep on one side, then edge the boat to that side, while reverse sweeping on the other
3. Lean back immediately. This is one of the more confusing aspects of the stern stall. To get the bow to go away from you and you not just fall over backwards, you need to “lay back” so to speak. This causes your feet/legs to push the boat back upright.
From there just find your balance point and use your stick behind your head to keep things level. Just be careful about your shoulders. You’re definitely not in “the box” at this point 🙂
There isn’t anything wrong with the way you are doing it. Since you’re top heavy, using that mass to throw the boat around is pretty effective. A 100 pounder might not find your way as effective. Just always remember to be mindful of putting force on joints in compromised positions…especially with roll trainers 😀
Also, I suck at playboating, so take this advice for what it is 😛 If you ever need info on boofing/stroke technique/long boating, I’ll be of much better use.
Keep up the drive!

The fact that there was a legitimate river hazard makes more sense. I took it first as it was an attempt to take out of play a difficult/more dangerous line in order to level the playing ground. If the move I’ve always known is no longer that move, I understand your decision making.
I also like your initial thought of moving the race course, Chuck. Taking the hazard out of play altogether rather than mandating a certain line through a rapid jives better in terms of philosophy and legality, at least with my absolute ignorance of liability law.
I was thinking about all you guys racing as I was driving down to the Columbia River Gorge on Friday. Wished I could have apparated there and got my ol’ Quest wet again…maybe next year…

Agreed.
DR is made of three things:
1. Physical stamina.
2. River reading to know the fastest line.
3. The skills to put to use 1. And 2.
If someone is dictating #2, doesn’t seem right.
Go fast, take chances. Just because someone else can’t keep thier bow online doesn’t mean you can’t.

I hope there is drug testing. I’ve been shooting up so many things I’ve lost track. A comprehensive breakdown would be nice.
It’s gotten so bad that these days that all I do is piss excellence…

I thought that those boats were considered “wildwater” and not to be used in the general DR.
If that is not the case, please let me know, I’ll go pickup a Speeder this week 😀

Are those boats going to be legal?

Dan, I can bring you a Dagger Greenboat to paddle for the DR race. It’s even been specially modified to reduce weight.
Let me know if you’d like to have a 11’6″ boat to race down in.

That’s awesome! Is it a man made feature? So uniform that it makes me think it is a low water bridge, but there appears to still be some gradient elsewhere…
I’ve seen what looked to be a little gradient on that creek back when I lived in So. Illinois and had nothing better to do than search for “whitewater”. Glad you guys found some!
Maybe the next time I come home to visit, you can show me the run if there is some flow. I’ll make sure to bring noseplugs, I know what that water quality is like… :\

You’re wanting to apply logic to the government’s decisions?!
Things like science and math have no place in our government, we go off emotions baby, ‘Merica!
