      Greetings –

The race committee, in their infinite wisdom, has agreed to allow SUPs in both Downriver & Slalom for this year’s races, under certain conditions.

DOWNRIVER:  SUPs will start after OC on Saturday afternoon.  Either SAFETY will provide a Sweep boat, or SUP community needs to provide their own sweep.  Be at Downriver meeting area with everyone else.

SLALOM:  SUP slalom will be run on Sunday with OC & Short/Long Plastic Kayak classes.  SUP racers are required to have helmets & PFDs.  Tethers are discouraged, although quick-release, coiled racing tethers are allowed.  SUPs will run the same course as everyone else but can skip the Upstream gates.  SUP racers should not attempt to “attain” to return to run a downstream gate.  SUP racer must stay with board at all times – if paddler & board get separated where it would be unlikely that paddler can retrieve board, remount & continue paddling through the course, then that run shall be declared a DNF and racer should exit the course.  SAFETY shall determine whether, in their opinion, paddler & board are too widely separated, and will blow their whistle, indicating the run is over.  JUDGES should score gates as usual, whether paddler is on the board or not, until they hear the Safety whistle a DNF.

We are still considering a SUP Boatercross class on Sunday morning.  It’s up to Di McHenry.

This is a test case – let’s see how it works this year.

If you want to race in a SUP class this year, please notify Race Registrar Kelly by Friday Late Registration deadline (or by email before Thursday midnight), as the on-line & paper registration forms didn’t cover it.

Total SUP Novices are discouraged from attempting the slalom race.  (This is true for other boats too – if you’ve never been down the Saint, you probably shouldn’t be racing the Saint!)

      Enjoy!
