Takin’ a break at work again and come across this old photo of the dam at Silvermines before it was breached.

That’s cool George. Dusty and I were kayaking yesterday evening and were talking about if Chuck or someone else knew the history of the dam. I just looked up the history a little bit now though.

People always say they blasted it out….not sure. I have a picture my Dad took about 55 years ago and the dam spillway had smooth, vertical, concrete walls on either side. Also, there were No trees from the dam down to the low water bridge. It was all rock and gravel. We used to have a game where we’d walk all the way to the dam on boulders and never touch anything else.

did you notice this other picture, which says it’s the dam at silver mines, and some of the mine, taken in 1903. It looks like the dam has water running over the whole span. Looking upstream.

1903….it looks like a pre-dam in the picture….did they build a bigger better on after 1903?

Nuts- this was supposed to be the little saying I always put as reason for edit and I can’t delete it to put it where it belongs.

speaking of blowing up the dam…
according to a writeup in “Hiking Missouri” the mine started in 1877, and the dam was built 2 years later. (see excerpt here)

Chuck – I think this picture shows the dam as a straight white bar, looking upstream (see the mine buildings on the LHS of the pic?). To me, it looks like water is running over the entire top of the dam, like a river wide waterfall. Maybe the Saint was high when they took the pic? Also, the water in the foreground looks like what you’d see in a long exposure picture, so maybe that’s why the whole dam looks a uniform white.

The swimming hole picture looks more like the dam at Marble Creek
