Pool Classes – Fundamentals of Whitewater Kayaking

Registration is open! This last series of winter 2024 is the perfect way to start the pursuit of whitewater kayaking. You will build fundamental skills indoors, in a warm pool. Skills include strokes, edging, the roll, and blending strokes for river maneuvers. Discussion will cover safety, gear, river running, and more. The curriculum is congruent with ACA Level 1: Introduction to River Kayaking L1_IK_Skills.pdf (americancanoe.org).
- Younger participants are welcome, with prior instructor approval IF (a) they enroll with an adult (parent/caregiver) who will participate in the class with the child, and (b) they have a boat that fits the young person. Please talk to the instructors (see below).
SESSION 1: SEPTEMBER 10 – OCTOBER 22, 2023.
SESSION 2: OCTOBER 29 – DECEMBER 17, 2023 (No class 11/26 for Thanksgiving. If 12/17 is not needed as make-up, it will be an open session for anyone)
No classes 12/24 nor 12/31, 2023.
SESSION 3: JANUARY 7 – FEBRUARY 18, 2024 (No class 1/11 for Pool Slalom 2024)
SESSION 4: FEBRUARY 25 – APRIL 21, 2024 (No class 3/17 for 56th Annual Missouri Whitewater Championships (MWC); No class 3/24 for Melville spring break; No class 3/31 for Easter)
Experienced paddlers – Free pool time is available at the beginning of each pool class (while the students are in a classroom), with the expectation that you stay to help coach our class of new paddlers.
The group usually shares dinner afterward at a nearby restaurant. All are welcome.
