Each spring, the Missouri Whitewater Association, Sierra Club, STL Canoe & Kayak Club and other outdoor groups provide volunteer judges for the Missouri Whitewater Championships. Judges are needed for the kayak and canoe slalom races through the rapids of Millstream Gardens Conservation Area on the St. Francis River near Fredericktown.

This year, the slalom races will be held Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18, 2018. No experience is needed. Volunteers will be trained and paired with experienced judges for an up-close look at the action. Volunteers may come and help judge the races on Saturday or Sunday or both days. You would be part of a team of judges stationed throughout the slalom course that will watch skilled boaters paddle through the rapids and gates (poles hung from overhead wires). Each slalom racer’s score is a combination of time it takes to paddle the course and how successful they were in negotiating each set of gates. Race judges determine the latter. You would be judging the race in one of the most spectacular outdoor locations in Missouri, amid a beautiful springtime setting, and share the weekend with fellow members of MWA, the Sierra Club and STL Canoe & Kayak Club. A complete description of the event and maps are available at the Missouri Whitewater Association Championships page.

Free car camping is provided in the nearby group camp at Silver Mines Recreation Area on Friday and Saturday night. In addition, the downriver race will be held on Friday, March 16th at 4:00 pm, no judges are required for it, but you might enjoy watching the action. NOTE THAT ALL JUDGES ARE REQUIRED TO MEET AT 8:00 AM SATURDAY & 8:30 AM SUNDAY at the Millstream Gardens Pavilion. Directions will be provided.
