Interesting. Di and I went to the Saint to run the dogs and “try” to paddle (for me- not so hot) and on the way we see that Lake Killarney is completely emptied. Now along with Crane Pond emptied, the lower stout’s and crane pond runs are going to be a real problem catching…
That also helps explain the river’s rise at D. Some areas around Ironton got almost 2 inches of rain however. The watershed is close to primed. The acid test is whether water is flowing at Delassus, which I’ll check Mon or Tues. -

It is a total mess! Filled up with silt. Was covered in weeds and alga. Apparently only a few areas more than a foot deep. It looks like a wasteland. I have no idea how they are going to fix the problem- I hope by not washing it down river- but if they bulldoze etc it will mean muddy stout’s.

Definitely not good news about Stout’s and Lake Killarney. And it’s totally weird that both Killarney and Crane Lake have been drained at the same time. Linda and I were at Crane Lake a few weeks ago. Just like Killarney, it is silted in right up against the dam where you’d expect it to be deepest. The USFS supposedly drained Crane Lake to do repairs on the dam but now say there’s no money for that.
We can’t paddle the whitewater of Crane Pond Creek unless Crane Lake is full. Then, when it rains, the lake spills over the dam to give the flow needed to paddle below the lake. Now, all a rain event will do is partially fill the mostly empty lake.
Imho, MWA should support repairing the dam to return the status quo.

There are two 14″ pipes about 12′ down from the top and center of Killarney Dam (Rainbow Falls). One was opened on October 31 to lower the lake level to kill the under water grass that has caused the algae problem the last couple years and to let property owners do work on their docks.
The last time this was done was after the 93 flood damaged the dam. There are no plans for dredge work and the valve is to be closed in the next few weeks. Michelle and I walked across the dam Sunday and it looks very different than when we normally see it with water going over all of the top. I never remember to take pictures.
When we crossed Stouts on CO Rd 535 you could tell the open pipe made a difference in the flow but the Saint while flowing was still around -8″ at our cabin.
