from the Springfield News Leader:
…
The United States Geological Survey Missouri Water Science Center in Rolla maintains 274 real-time gauges — 49 of which are scheduled to be deactivated after June 30.
Funding for the gauges comes from various entities, said Amy Beussink, director of the Missouri Water Science Center, among them the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Conservation and the Department of Transportation. Gauges are paid for individually, and funding varies year-by-year depending on the priorities of the entities partnering with USGS.
The center collects, analyzes and provides water data to entities such as the National Weather Service and the Army Corps of Engineers, Beussink said.
Beussink said “a couple of different partners were dealing with budget constraints,” but she was hesitant to say which entities were less willing or able to provide gauge funding. She did note that discussions about the threatened gauges began in late March or early April.
It was about then that the Missouri House passed its version of the budget for DNR. Both the House and the Senate adhered to Gov. Eric Greitens recommendation to cut the core funding for the Missouri Geological Survey, which funds the Water Science Center in Rolla, by about $1.2 million.
Inquiries made to DNR and the governor’s spokesman were not returned Wednesday.

Our current government sucks! I believe in taking care of our environment. But also the safety of the people!

Thanks for posting Jim
2 important gauges on the chopping block.
Upper Jacks Fork at Mountain View
Upper Meramec at Cook Station
It gives contacts as
Paul Rydlund email prydlund@ usgs. gov phone 573-308-3572
Shane Barks email csbarks@usgs.gov phone 573-308-3574
So please contact these guys and ask them to save our gauges .
I see that none of the gauges down in Arkansas are being cut. Some of them privately funded with advertising on them . Why can’t Mo do that.
Also they try to cut funding during the previous administration. I don’t think they realize how important they are to us boaters. Please let them know.

If you speak to those USGS guys, be nice. I expect they are as anxious as we are to get the funding for the gages back. Shane was quoted in the article talking about how essential the gages are.
The problem appears to be that the MO House & Senate cut “the core funding for the Missouri Geological Survey, which funds the Water Science Center in Rolla, by about $1.2 million”.
How does that cut specifically relate to the funding for these particular gages? The article says:
“Funding for the gauges comes from various entities, said Amy Beussink, director of the Missouri Water Science Center, among them the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Conservation and the Department of Transportation. Gauges are paid for individually, and funding varies year-by-year depending on the priorities of the entities partnering with USGS.
The center collects, analyzes and provides water data to entities such as the National Weather Service and the Army Corps of Engineers, Beussink said.
Beussink said “a couple of different partners were dealing with budget constraints,” but she was hesitant to say which entities were less willing or able to provide gauge funding.”
So someone in DNR, MDOC or DOT, or other related entities, has prioritized the funding they have, and as a result, these gages are on the chopping block.
